Android BluetoothChat Sample

This sample shows how to implement two-way text chat over Bluetooth between two Android devices, using all the fundamental Bluetooth API capabilities.

Introduction

This sample should be run on two Android devices at the same time, to establish a two-way chat over Bluetooth between the devices. Select "Made discoverable" in overflow menu on one device and click on the Bluetooth icon on the other one, to find the device and establish the connection.

The sample demonstrates the following, using the Bluetooth API:

  1. Setting up Bluetooth
  2. Scanning for other Bluetooth devices
  3. Querying the local Bluetooth adapter for paired Bluetooth devices
  4. Establishing RFCOMM channels/sockets
  5. Connecting to a remote device
  6. Transfering data over Bluetooth

  • Android Build Tools v26.0.1
  • Android Support Repository

Getting Started

This sample uses the Gradle build system. To build this project, use the "gradlew build" command or use "Import Project" in Android Studio.

MainActivity

A simple launcher activity containing a summary sample description, sample log and a custom {@link android.support.v4.app.Fragment} which can display a view.

For devices with displays with a width of 720dp or greater, the sample log is always visible, on other devices it's visibility is controlled by an item on the Action Bar.

Create a chain of targets that will receive log data

DeviceListActivity

This Activity appears as a dialog. It lists any paired devices and devices detected in the area after discovery. When a device is chosen by the user, the MAC address of the device is sent back to the parent Activity in the result Intent.
